Iran's Alleged Assassination Plot Against Donald Trump

The U.S. Department of Justice has unveiled charges against an Afghan citizen, Farhad Shakeri, who was allegedly instructed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to surveil and plot the assassination of former President Donald Trump prior to the recent presidential election. The criminal complaint, filed in Manhattan, indicates that Shakeri was tasked with developing this plan in October, although he reportedly did not intend to meet the timeline set by his Iranian handlers.

Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating that Shakeri was part of a network directed by the Iranian regime to carry out assassination plots against various targets, including Trump. He highlighted Iran as a significant threat to U.S. national security. In response, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the allegations as baseless, claiming they were part of a conspiracy involving Israel and Iranian opposition groups aimed at complicating U.S.-Iran relations.

The investigation revealed that Shakeri was also involved in a separate plot with two New York residents to kill a journalist critical of Iran. The complaint details how the trio conducted surveillance on the journalist and communicated updates to Shakeri, who is believed to be in Iran. Shakeri, who was deported from the U.S. after serving time for robbery, allegedly utilized connections made during his imprisonment to assist the IRGC in carrying out surveillance and assassination missions.

The FBI has noted an increase in threats against Trump, particularly following a July assassination attempt that was not linked to foreign actors. Despite the lack of direct connections to foreign governments in recent threats, Trump has publicly acknowledged being briefed on significant threats to his life from Iranian agents, indicating a heightened concern regarding his safety amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
