Karachi Industrial Park as a Model Special Economic Zone
The Karachi Industrial Park is set to be designated as a model special economic zone (SEZ) in Pakistan, as announced by Minister for Privatization and Investment Abdul Aleem Khan. This initiative is part of a broader development strategy under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which includes the establishment of nine SEZs across the country. The Karachi Industrial Park, covering 1,500 acres on the land of Pakistan Steel Mills, aims to enhance industrial growth and attract investment.
During a recent meeting of a focal group established by the Prime Minister, Aleem Khan emphasized the necessity of providing special incentives to these SEZs to ensure their success. He mentioned that one of the SEZs would be handed over to China on a trial basis, reflecting the government's commitment to international collaboration in industrial development. The meeting also addressed the various challenges faced by existing industrial zones, which have suffered from neglect in recent years.
Aleem Khan pointed out that the potential of industrial zones to boost the economy has not been fully realized due to a lack of support and outdated practices. He called for urgent measures to resolve the issues plaguing these zones, including the provision of special privileges to attract new industries. The minister's directives aim to revitalize the industrial sector and ensure that the necessary infrastructure and incentives are in place.
The focal group, which includes senior officials from various sectors, is tasked with preparing recommendations to expedite the development of industrial zones. Future meetings will focus on finalizing the agenda and making critical decisions to facilitate progress. The government's proactive approach indicates a renewed focus on industrialization as a means to enhance economic growth in Pakistan.
