Meta Revives Facial Recognition Technology

Meta is reintroducing its facial recognition technology on Facebook after a three-year hiatus, which was initially halted due to privacy concerns and regulatory pressures. The company announced that it will begin testing the software again, focusing on combating "celeb bait" scams that exploit the likenesses of public figures. Approximately 50,000 public figures will be enrolled in this trial, where their profile photos will be automatically compared to images used in suspected scam advertisements. If a match is found and deemed a scam, Meta will block the ads, while allowing enrolled celebrities the option to opt out of participation.

The revival of this technology comes as Meta faces increasing scrutiny over its handling of user data and the rise of scams using celebrity images, often generated by artificial intelligence. In 2021, Meta had deleted the facial recognition data of one billion users, citing societal concerns. Recently, the company was ordered to pay $1.4 billion to Texas for allegedly collecting biometric data illegally. The new trial aims to provide protection for public figures while addressing regulatory concerns about scams, demonstrating Meta's attempt to balance the use of potentially invasive technology with user privacy.

In addition to protecting public figures, Meta plans to explore using facial recognition data to help non-celebrity users regain access to their accounts if compromised. The company has stated that any facial data generated during the trial will be immediately deleted, regardless of whether a scam is detected. This initiative has undergone a thorough privacy and risk review process, and discussions with regulators and privacy experts were held prior to the testing phase. As Meta moves forward with this technology, it aims to enhance user safety while navigating the complex landscape of privacy regulations.
