A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either due to a ruptured blood vessel or a blockage. This disruption can lead to brain cell death within minutes, making it a critical health emergency. World Stroke Day, observed on October 29, aims to raise awareness about this serious condition and its risk factors. Recent studies have highlighted that individuals who stand for prolonged periods, such as retail workers and factory employees, are at an increased risk of stroke due to potential blood clots forming in the legs.

Dr. Raghvendra Ramdasi, a consultant neurosurgeon, explains that extended standing can lead to poor circulation and blood pooling in the legs, which may result in clot formation. If these clots travel to the brain, they can cause a stroke. Additionally, poor circulation is linked to hypertension, another significant risk factor for stroke. The alarming statistics show that stroke is the third leading cause of death globally, with new cases and related deaths rising significantly since 1990.

In addition to prolonged standing, other stroke risk factors include a high-sodium diet, sedentary lifestyle, heavy alcohol and tobacco use, family history, and age. Certain ethnic groups, such as African Americans and Native Americans, are also at a higher risk. Understanding these factors is crucial for prevention and early intervention, as timely action can save lives.

When someone experiences a stroke, immediate response is vital. The BE FAST method is recommended for assessing symptoms: check for balance issues, visual disturbances, facial drooping, arm weakness, and slurred speech. If any of these symptoms are present, it is essential to call emergency services promptly. Raising awareness about stroke risks and recognizing symptoms can significantly impact outcomes and improve public health.
