  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

For the yogurt sauce (optional):

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Meatball Mixture:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb, grated onion, garlic, parsley, mint, cumin, coriander, paprika, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne (if using), salt, and pepper.
  • Add the beaten egg and breadcrumbs, and mix everything together thoroughly until well combined.

2. Shape the Meatballs:

  • Using your hands, form the mixture into small meatballs (about 1-1.5 inches in diameter).
  • Place the formed meatballs on a baking sheet or plate.

3. Cook the Meatballs:

  • You can either pan-fry or bake the meatballs.

    For pan-frying:

    • Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Fry the meatballs in batches, turning them to brown all sides, for about 8-10 minutes until fully cooked.

    For baking:

    • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Place the meatballs on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until cooked through.

4. Make the Yogurt Sauce (Optional):

  • While the meatballs are cooking, combine the yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, mint, garlic, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Stir well to combine.
  • Refrigerate the sauce until ready to serve.

5. Serve:

  • Serve the lamb kofta meatballs hot with the yogurt sauce on the side.
  • These meatballs are delicious with pita bread, over rice, or alongside a fresh salad.
