WHO Approves Mpox Vaccine for Adolescents

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved Bavarian Nordic's mpox vaccine for use in adolescents aged 12 to 17, recognizing their heightened vulnerability to the viral infection. This decision follows the WHO's declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, prompted by a new strain of the virus spreading from the Democratic Republic of Congo to neighboring countries. The approval aims to enhance access to the vaccine in regions severely affected by mpox, particularly in Africa.

The Jynneos vaccine received prequalification from the WHO on October 8, after the European Union had already approved its use for adolescents in September. The vaccine is crucial as children, adolescents, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of experiencing severe symptoms from mpox, which can include flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. Bavarian Nordic is also planning a clinical trial to evaluate the vaccine's safety for younger children aged two to 12, with the trial expected to commence in October.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Bavarian vaccine for adults aged 18 and older, while granting Emergency Use Authorization for adolescents during the 2022 mpox outbreak. Meanwhile, Japan's KM Biologics has developed another mpox vaccine, LC16, which is already approved for use in children, although it requires a specific type of needle for administration. The global health community is closely monitoring the situation as confirmed cases of the new mpox strain have emerged in various countries, including Sweden, Thailand, and several African nations.

As mpox cases rise, particularly in Pakistan, health officials are on high alert. The country has reported multiple cases, with concerns about the virus's spread through international travel. Authorities are taking measures to identify and manage suspected cases, emphasizing the need for immediate action to contain the outbreak. The WHO's approval of the vaccine for adolescents is a significant step in addressing the public health challenge posed by mpox and protecting vulnerable populations
